From his early years in Biddy Basketball to playing professionally overseas and in the NBA, Kasib Powell has demonstrated a real love for the game and true basketball skills. Basketball is his passion and perserverance is his middle name!
Kasib Powell grew up in Teaneck, New Jersey where he became involved in organized sports (basketball and baseball) at the age of 5. Kasib was smaller than most of his peers and understood that he would have to work especially hard to stand out amongst them. He made a decision to practice extra hard, listen to his coaches and study the game. Although he was a good baseball player, he recognized his special gift for basketball and decided to focus solely on that sport.
By high school Kasib was playing point guard at 5’11. Then something strange happened. He had a growth spurt in the summer after his junior year, growing 3 inches in 1 month. By the end of the growth spurt he was 6’5 and his feet had grown 4 full sizes. He had to make some adjustments and was moved to the position of forward in his senior year. That year Kasib was selected to First Team All League and Second Team All Group IV. Kasib led his team to a Group IV State Championship win in 1999, finishing with a 30-2 record.
After high school, Kasib made the trip to Kansas to attend junior college and play basketball for Dennis Helms at Butler County Community College for two years. Kasib saw this as an opportunity to prove that he could balance his academic and athletic life. While maintaining a strong academic record, Kasib was given an Honorable Mention All-American selection and was named 1st Team All Region and 1st Team All-Conference. Kasib started in every game both years and scored over 1,000 pts in 2 years!!! He also grew another 2 inches, leaving him at 6’7.
Kasib was then recruited by Bobby Knight and became a part of the first team Bobby Knight coached at Texas Tech University. In his first year at Texas Tech he was named: Big 12 All Underrated Team by the sports writers, Honorable Mention All Big 12 by the coaches, and was ranked among conference leaders in assists /turnover ratio, field goals, scoring, and rebounds. Kasib (as Team Captain) led the Red Raiders in assists and rebounds and was the teams second leading scorer. He was the first player in the Big 12 Tournament to have a Triple Double. Kasib graduated on time with a Bachelors Degree in Communications.
Kasib decided to pursue his dream of becoming a professional basketball player. He went to play professionally overseas in Yugoslavia and Greece. Accepting his position as a role model, Kasib took every opportunity to speak with young people about the importance of making good life decisions.
In 2004 Kasib was picked up by the Minnesota Timberwolves to play for their summer league and the pre-season of 2004. He was one of the last players cut from the team. After being released from the Minnesota Timberwolves, Kasib decided to stay in the United States and went to Michigan to play for the Great Lakes Storm in the CBA. With the Storm he averaged 18 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists per game. Kasib was named to the Eastern Conference All Star Team and played in the All Star Game. After the CBA season he joined the New Jersey Flyers in the USBL, where he also excelled.
Kasib spent the summer of 2005 playing with the Chicago Bulls. Kasib played for the Bulls during the summer league in Las Vegas and played in 5 games during the season. Again he was the last person cut from the team. He was disappointed but determined not to give up.
In pursuit of a dream, he made his way to North Dakota to play for the Dakota Wizards. He played 42 games while starting 41. He averaged 18.7 ppg, 7.3 rpg and 6 assists. He had 292 rebounds, 252 Assists, 16 block shots, and 71 steals in the 42 games. Kasib was named the CBA Player of the Week (1/30-2/5).
Kasib accepted an offer to go to Bosnia to play professionally. There he led his team to a championship. Kasib has played everywhere on the floor except center. The experience he brings cannot be understated.
Kasib has played with the Orlando Magic and the Los Angeles Lakers during their summer leagues, entered his own team into the UBL summer league (and won the championship) and became even more involved in community service projects targeting youth.
Kasib has played with the Sioux Falls Skyforce in 2008 where he was named the Most Valuable Player of the year. He received a call up to the Miami Heat which he was signed for the rest of the season.
When it didn't work out for the next season Kasib followed the money and went to play in China. He soon came back Sioux Falls to give the NBA another try.
Kasib next played with the Orlando Magic Summer League in 2009 where he earned 2nd Team of the Orlando Summer League.
